At West Chester University, S.I.G.M.A. stands for Swope Inter Greek Music
Association. It consists of four music organizations: Tau Beta Sigma, Kappa
Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, and Sigma Alpha Iota. The original purpose of
S.I.G.M.A. was to only need one seat at the Student Government Association. By
having a seat in the Student Government Association, all four could receive
funding from the school and fiscally benefit.
Although
I’m a young sister of Tau Beta Sigma, from my understanding the four music groups have an ugly past. There were petty conflicts and resentments
based on miscommunication and lack of understanding. Instead of focusing on
what they had in common, the organizations chose to focus on the negative
qualities in the others and held onto those harsh feelings.
With
that history in mind, I could not be prouder of what S.I.G.M.A. is on the verge
of becoming. This year the four presidents of the organizations met to discuss
revamping the constitution and electing new officers that had the time to make
S.I.G.M.A. more than just a name to get us funding.
On
September 16 the new officers were elected and I became the vice president. I
could not be more honored and thrilled to have this opportunity. I envision a
future for S.I.G.M.A. in which we can unite in music, service, and
social experiences. By working together we can improve joint relations, achieve
set goals together, and make friends in Brothers and Sisters we might not have
noticed before.
